Ryan Hawes and Tony O’Brien have played in a number of local bands over the last 20 years or so (notably The Crush and Flying Blind) and therefore have plenty of experience in live band work. We play live guitar, bass and vocals and use recorded drums, backing guitars and keyboards.
Our main differentiator is that we have recorded most of our backing tracks ourselves, rather than relying on Internet downloads.  This means we aren’t limited to only those tracks that can be found on the Internet and can therefore do virtually any song we choose (including a number of NZ songs, which are virtually impossible to find MIDI tracks for). It also means that, because we use sampled drum sounds and record real guitars in the backing tracks, our backing track doesn’t sound computer-generated at all and is pretty much as authentic-sounding as we can get it. In short, we can get a full band sound into a relatively small space.
Rob arrived in November 2005 from the UK with his family. He has been playing guitar for over thirty years. He has gigged in the UK for over twenty years and has over 1800 gigs under his belt either with bands or duos. Over 300 of those gigs were weddings or private functions. Rob has also run a disco alongside the live music at most of these functions.
In addition to this he has taught the guitar and keyboards for over fifteen years and already has several students established here in Christchurch.
Becky Faulknor
Originally from Napier, Becky has been singing all her life, including productions in school. She was in a high school rock band where they competed in the Smoke Free Rock Quest in 1992. They made it into the finals and even made an appearance on the telly! She left school in 1993 and completed a 2 year Diploma in Performing Arts (Voice) where she sang in Italian, French and German, and made numerous appearances singing in concerts.
Since that ended she has been in various bands, trio’s and duo’s, singing at birthdays, weddings and in pubs and clubs until linking up with Rob in January 2006.

FHM – retro from the get-go
Contrary to popular belief fhm have discovered that the 60’s are definitely still swinging. So are the 70’s and 80’s for that matter and it seems that we all like to revisit the time when we had:
more hair on our head than our body
could see our waist
knew how to shimmy, shake, rattle and roll without causing grievous bodily harm
Well who wouldn’t? Taint nuthin’ wrong with a bit of fun and what better way to get the giggles than a psychedelic trip down memory lane with fhm and a few hundred of your closest friends. Ok, ok… so no- ones quite that popular but The Funky Hot Mamas belting out hits of the 60’s 70’s and 80’s most certainly are.
Sporting beehives to rival that of Marge Simpson fhm swing you straight into the turbulent 60’s and soon have you intoxicated by their outrageous energy and madcap antics. Settle into the groovy vibe of the 70’s and feel the funky beat. All inhibition lost… Disco is alive! And lastly be embraced by the great anthems of the 80’s, (never mind the tragic fashion) ‘cut footloose’ and ‘get down tonight’ with The Funky Hot Mamas.
Cabaret Savignon – Sweet, Light and a little Tart.
The saying goes, “there’s no business like show business” and assuming yet another alias fhm prove this point with pizzazz. Teamed with the outstanding talent of Dale Hartley, Leigh and Lou recreate the old razzle dazzle that embodies all things theatrical with costumes, song and dance.
An insight into the egotistical battles between stage divas “Do it the Broadsway” is based in showbiz roots and offers such favourites as “Three Little Maids”, “Broadway Baby” and “You Could Drive A Person crazy”….. and they frequently do. Not to be missed Cabaret Sauvignon’s “Do it the Broadsway” is a hot favourite for dinner parties, conferences or any occasion where you want to impress your guests. Up market, stylish and performed amongst a flurry of sensational costume changes, Cabaret Sauvignon warms the palate, soothes the senses and sweetens the soul. Don’t hesitate…”Do it the Broadsway”.
Crowd Captured by Mafia Mistresses
If there was any doubt as to the sanity of The Funky Hot Mamas, here now is the proof that they haven’t just lost the plot…they never knew where it was in the first place. Making its debut in 2002, the Mafia show is one of fhm’s best-kept secrets. Able to hold an audience to ransom there is now evidence that their brand of musical madness is perfect for that intimate function where you want to poke fun at your friends, clients or co workers.
The Mafia show is full of good old fashioned Italian themes like food, wine, family, pizza, love, and reinforced concrete footwear… that kind of thing. A real treat for a luncheon, BBQ, dinner party, or conference. The Mafia show rollicks through a medley of classic cabaret, comedy, song and dance to titillate the taste buds as well as the funny bone. With enough costume changes to rival any Italian fashion house, the Mafia show presents “the family” as never seen before… sassy, single and in stilettos.
This outstanding duo features Andy Page on vocals, electric and bass guitar with Nic Pegg on acoustic and electric guitar, bass, harmonica and vocals. Fleck are full time professional musicians who perform in bars, hotels, private functions, weddings, birthdays and corporate events throughout Canterbury and the West Coast.
For over 10 years they have been resident at Chats Bar in Christchurch every Thursday night where they have an ethusiatic following.
Both Andy and Nic have played in many bands previously, so bring a wealth of experience to Fleck having played many different genres of music over the years; they embrace the use of the latest technology to present a full band, high quality sound.
Their considerable repertoire includes music from The Beatles and Pink Floyd era through to recent years and is designed to be flexible to suit whatever the occasion or mood requires.
Andy Page has been a part of a number of bands such as The Alley Cats, Jambusters, Spinner, USZ and for the past 12 years the duo Calder Page. They were in fact the first two piece band to play at a number of venues which would otherwise have had larger acts, a policy of keeping their lungs and fingers as busy as possible, resulting in an experience matching that of bands, which take up a lot more space and demand a much larger cheque at an evenings conclusion. He has also fronted a few tribute bands – The Doors Show, Rod Stuart and The Commitments, just to name a few and also spends a lot of time on his original music.
One of a Fleck’s best assets is the ability to have total control of the volume that an audience faces, something that Fleck is very sensitive to and always open to suggestions from patrons. Their repertoire has evolved from many years of observing audiences reactions to a large range of popular songs, with classic dance songs of the seventies and the eighties continuing to be the most popular. They also have a number of quieter pieces, which provide a pleasant setting earlier in an evening when people are still eating or wishing to greet guests to a function. This repertoire numbers over one hundred songs and as a typical night out will demand forty to fifty items, sets will often be adjusted to accommodate for requests and general audience preferences. If requested, the band can learn a special item for a couple’s first wedding dance. Fleck however are always armed with a compact disc player and take no offence if a couple would prefer to dance to the original recording of a song that has special significance to them
There are many different forms of entertainment to choose from now days, but quality of sound and entertainment can vary appreciably. The only safe way to ensure that you make a well judged booking is to go out and see some bands. Fleck openly encourages that you come and see them entertain at one of their many public engagements as they have full confidence that you will like what you see and hear. This is also a good opportunity to meet Andy and Andy, and to discuss any questions that you might have. Playtime Promotions can be contacted for a list of upcoming dates and venues where Fleck will be entertaining, and can also fax or e-mail out a copy of their repertoire.
Fleck is one of Christchurch leading wedding bands and specialise in birthdays, weddings etc.

I’d just like to say a huge THANK YOU to FLECK for doing such a great job at our wedding on 27 October. They did a brilliant rendition of our first dance, Dave Dobbyns “Oughta be in love”, I know they put a lot of work into it and they really pulled it off! Fleck played Dave Dobbyn again as the last song of the night, which was a nice touch and a great end to the night (and we got to do our dance again!). It was also great that they thought of us when they played taped music during their breaks and put on Exponents for us – so cool!
We had lots of positive comments about Fleck, the guests thought they were great and liked the trumpet and the range of songs they played
Can you please pass on a massive thank you to Andy and Andy in Fleck who performed at our wedding on the 16 April at Terrace Downs. They did the most amazing job and all our guests were raving about them for days after. So many people said they hadn’t danced for that long in ages !! They were simply the best.
