The Beat Girls

They said it couldn’t be done – that you could take a tribute show so clever and polished that it’s performed at arts festivals around the world, yet still make it relevant for the corporate events market. But that’s the unique position enjoyed by The Beatgirls as they become the only act to have performed at two consecutive Olympics Games organisers’ events (Sydney and Athens).

In a reminder of the famous show-room revues of Las Vegas, The Beatgirls are a stage show bringing alive the music, fashions and dance of the eras they pay tribute to. With a trio of singers, amazing choreography, outrageous costumes and wild wigs, The Beatgirls cover six decades of music from the Andrews Sisters, the Girl Groups of the 1960s and The Beatles to Disco, ABBA and Kylie Minogue.

Whether it’s the Olympics, Wedding, a private party or corporate clients such as Hollywood’s Peter Jackson and General Motors, The Beatgirls have earned a global reputation as the entertainers who can get the CEO on their feet.

Singing from the 1940’s through to today – what more could you ask for!

Guy Cater – Hypnotist

1997
First hypnotist in the world to perform in Singapore!

2005
First hypnotist in the world to perform in Rarotonga!

2006
First New Zealand hypnotist to headline in Las Vagas!

It was an important day for Americans…11th September 2006…the 5th anniversary of the attack on the Twin Towers… and also for Kiwi Comedian and Hypnotist Guy Cater. That night he headlined at the famous Riviera Hotel and Casino on the Strip in Las Vegas. He played the Le Bistro Theatre in the Riviera. Just the one night but a lifelong dream came true for Guy. Las Vegas is the Mecca for all performers and Guy achieved it. As a result of this night, Guy was booked to reappear at the Riviera for seven nights in June 2007. He has also performed for large corporate shows at The Las Vegas Hilton and The Palace Station Hotel & Casino off the Strip and was back in Vegas in 2008 performing again at the Riviera plus corporate shows.

In 2006, he left New Zealand fresh on the heels of Hypnotising ex-All Black and ex-Warrior and current television celebrity, Matthew Ridge on TV One’s popular show ‘A Game of Two Halves’ and appearing on TV3’s ‘Pacific Beat Street’ program. On June 10th 2007, he hypnotized many WARRIORS league players at a charity event organised by The Mad Butcher, and both played on the Maori Television channel over three weeks. In September 2008 he did the Warriors again and this made the news on TV3 and Prime as well as full coverage on Maori TV.

Guy truly is New Zealand’s International Comedy Entertainer … last year alone; he performed corporate shows in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, Macau in China, Singapore and Bangkok, Thailand and in The Cook Islands.

Each year, with wife Cynthia, he spends six weeks to three months in the USA performing at Grad Nights throughout California and performing at County and State Fairs in Oregon, Iowa, Wyoming and California and in Casinos in Las Vegas… plus Corporate and Comedy Clubs all over.

Guy is a recipient of the sought after BENNY AWARD… Highest accolade given by the Variety Artists Club of New Zealand and has twice won their COMEDIAN OF THE YEAR award… and on 16TH October 2007 he won the AGNEW AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN PERFORMANCE.

TRADITIONAL POWHIRI

– A MAORI WELCOME

(Estimated length 5-10 minutes)

CONCH SOUNDING” will alert your customers that their cultural experience is about to begin.
“KARANGA” Once the conch has sounded one of our Maori maidens will sing a karanga or song of welcome.
“HAKA POWHIRI” Following the karanga the group will perform a chant of welcome.
“MIHI” The first words of welcome and speeches will then begin which will be followed by a song by the host tribe to conclude this part of the performance.
“WAIATA KINAKI” performed by the group in an acknowledgement of the words spoken in the mihi, by our Chief.
“HONGI” The pressing of noses or breath of life to bring both guests and local people together as one.

MAORI CULTURAL PERFORMANCE

(Estimated length 15-30 minutes)

“ENTERTAINMENT” Following the welcome our Maori Cultural Performing Arts Group will then entertain your visitors with a display of Actions Songs, Poi Dances and Haka. The length of these performances can vary from 15 to 45 minutes depending on what requirement the customer has and their timeframe.
“HAKA” Our warriors will perform the fearsome haka or war dance. Renowned the World over, its power will leave the audience with a thrilling crescendo. From Pre-European days to the present, a Haka Taparahi (the type performed for your customers) has always been a ceremonial haka never for war, and always performed without weapons, but with set actions.
“POI” As performed by the woman-folk. The poi itself is a “ball on the end of a string”. It is manipulated into forming twirling patterns and intricate rhythms and sung with lovely harmonies and melodies.
“WAIATA AROHA” There are many famous Maori waiata aroha, or love songs, Pokarekare Ana is only one of the many; you will hear a song special to the hearts and souls of our people.

Praesto Quartet

Praesto

The Praesto Quartet, based in Christchurch, New Zealand, has been performing since 1997. Our quartet, comprising the traditional two violins, viola and ‘cello, will add a touch of elegance to your wedding or function.

Our principle group of Chris Adams, Hamish Taylor, Helen Acheson and Iain Brandram-Adams has been joined by other musicians over the past four years in order to extend the number of events we can attend on any given day.

We offer a large variety of colour themes to coordinate with your bridesmaids, or in some cases the bride or the groomsmen. The men in the quartet wear black dinner jackets, black trousers and coloured waistcoats and bowties. Banners placed on our music stands also carry coloured ribbons or flowers to coordinate with the waistcoats. As we often play at ceremonies and feature in photographs, we consider the visual impact to be extremely important.

We have played in the past at many different events including many Christchurch City Council functions, playing for the Governor General, the University of Canterbury, Victoria in the Park, Vienese and other balls, the opening of the Winter Festival in Queenstown, opening of businesses, art exhibitions, ballets, Christmas functions, charitable events, silent auctions, golden anniversaries, christenings, banquets and many famous private weddings. We have played on a battleship, on punts, at the top of the gondola, on TV3 (Weddings) and CTV, at large hotels, cathedrals and churches, and recording studios. At weddings, the quartet usually plays for at least 15 minutes before the bride arrives. We also usually play for at least an additional hour after the ceremony while photos are being taken.

Please note that it is advisable to book for your event as far in advance as is practicable, especially if it is to be held during the busy summer months.
